How is the conductor cross-section of an EV charging cable determined?

Conductor cross-section must be selected according to rated current, cable construction, number of cores, installation method, ambient temperature and permissible voltage drop, in accordance with IEC 60364 and the manufacturer's current-carrying table. Common configurations in the industry are: 16 A AC cables often use 2.5 mm² cores; 32 A single-phase AC cables commonly use 4–6 mm²; three-phase 32 A cables commonly use 5×6 mm²; DC fast charging cables range from 6 mm² to over 95 mm² depending on the output current (typically 80 A to 500 A, and liquid-cooled designs may differ). Cables with insufficient cross-section overheat and accelerate insulation ageing. For non-standard installations or high ambient temperatures, consult the manufacturer or a qualified electrical engineer.
